Let the Fundraising Begin with 1st Graders!

Date: February 19, 2014 Author: Ivana Falla Categories: YIA Blog, Youth In Action In North America

All the way from Austin, Texas, Bryker Woods Elementary’s 1st Grade students have started fundraising to support Asante Africa Foundation in a two week long Quarters and Coins Drive.

Ms. Leu and Ms. Morris, a teacher and parent at Bryker Woods, wanted to do a service project for their class and we decided to connect them with a newly constructed primary school called Alton Maasai in Kenya. Earlier this year, the 1st grade students made numbers and letters to decorate the classroom, as well as a book about their school for Alton Maasai. Making a classroom-to-classroom connection exposes both classrooms to new cultures. They also learn the importance of having an education and helping others in need. For example, many Kenyan parents find it hard to buy their children underwear and socks so with the help of their parents and teachers, the 1st grade students decided to collect these items and ship them over to their new friends at Alton Maasai.

It is very exciting to see young kids doing their part in being global citizens and helping their peers across the world.

All funds raised will go towards helping Alton Maasai Primary School. As a single classroom with one teacher for 130 students, Bryker Woods is going to make a huge difference in these students’ education and so can you!

If you would like to help Bryker Wood Elementary’s fundraising efforts, ask your parents to make a donation here or send a check to Asante Africa Foundation to 1334 Carlton Place Livermore, CA 94550.
